Please Note: Roundhouse has been bought out by Athearn and the new run of
EMD 40's has had this problem repaired. As such, if you attempt to
follow these directions on a new model 40 it will fry the decoder. If you
have an EMD 40 in a green box it is from the new Athearn run and is safe to
run without the following repairs. However, if your EMD 40 is in a yellow or
a red box it is from the Roundhouse runs and requires some tweaking before
decoders can be installed. Important note! The directional lighting diodes mounted on the locomotive DCC plug board are mounted backwards! Do not plug a decoder into the socket and turn on the lights. You will instantly fry the decoder! Please carefully read all instructions below. Our MC2 decoder with 1" harness will fit beautifully inside this "Critter". It is "Plug N Play". Click on decoder installation photos below for close up images. As of January 2006 we have heard the second release of this loco has the problem with the reversed diodes corrected.
